Castle Birr
Many Carrolls are unaware that Castle Birr (pictured on this page) was the seat of the O'Carrolls, ancient Chiefs of the Territory of Eile. That territory consisted of the present day counties, Tipperary, and Offaly in southern Ireland (Eire). The last Carroll to hold residence in the castle was Sir Charles O'Carroll, the last undisputed lord of Eile in the year 1620.
Castle Birr was held for many generations by the powerful O'Carrolls before it was taken in warfare by the English. The castle was the scene of many bloody seiges, especially during the 16th and 17th centuries. Inside, one can find beautiful architecture, rising ceilings, hardwood carvings, and priceless art. In older times, while the O'Carrolls possessed it, Castle Birr had a large black tower. This disappeared in later years, giving way to a program of modernization by the next occupants.
Today, one can tour Castle Birr, however one cannot help but think of the O'Carrolls, and their defeat which took away their land, and holdings. For an opportunity to tour the former Territories of Eile, please check Clan Cian Tours.
