Welcome to this Introduction and Guide to Clan Cian’s Name Directory Please Note that some Names have different Ancestral Origination’s and may have migrated to, or settled in areas other than where their Name originated, thus making their Association and Allegiance to that Territorial Clan where they settled as being their Clan. Clans in Ireland as a Rule were Territorial Clans and not like the Scottish Family Clans.

Please Note also quite often those Families may be considered as being of different or separate Septs. That is to say, Not related.

Another point of Importance to bear in mind is that A Coat-of-Arms pertains to one individual only not a Family or Sept. One especially egregious example of this error appears in MacLysaghts Irish Families which will show perhaps one Coat-of-Arms per name with numerous origination being mentioned.

Names here are arranged by district Locations in Eile and Ormonde as Noted for this Introduction, with some Branches listed to Districts outside Eile O’Carroll and Ormonde

Another thing to mention is that many Family Names were located in what became called Ancient Ormonde after 1200. Ancient Ormonde prior to 1200 was connected as Eile O’Carroll and Ormonde Kingdoms.

Ormonde, consisted of a part of Counties, Waterford and Kilkenny, a major part of Tipperary, and Eile O’Carroll, North Tipperary, and Part of Offaly and Leix/Laoi Counties.

It should be noted that Munster Province had three Divisions.
(1) Desmond, (2) Ormonde-Eile and (3) Thomond

Desmond and Thomond each had a part in Tipperary, and as Noted above Ormonde had the major Tipperary part.

Sections and Divisions:
Section (1) is the line of the O’Carroll, High Chief and the Taniste of Eile.
The outline of the historical locations of the Cian Families run from Sections (2) through (6).

Specifically, Section (2) denotes known families that trace their descent to Cian and the O’Carroll Trunk Lines in Eile O’Carroll & Ormonde and are Cianachta - Race of Cian or Clan Cian.

Section (3) defines District locations in Eile and Ormonde where certain Family-Septs resided as well as their acknowledged Positions within the Eile Kingdom.

Section (4) Refers to Families in North Ossory, the part formerly known as North Eile in Counties Leix & Kilkenny which should not be confused with the Kingdom of Ossory.

Section (5) Is a listing of Dalcassian Families that were primarily in the Kingdom of Thomond or Counties Clare & Limerick. Some of the Dalcassian Families that were in Eile and Ormonde were part of Clan Cian.

Section (6) Pertains to our Eugenian Families in Desmond, or Counties Kerry, Cork and part of Waterford. Some of the Eugenian Families were also part of Clan Cian in Eile and Ormonde.
